“The worst wheel of the cart makes the most noise”

Benjamin Franklin

Changing a wheel of a moving train

Ever had the challenge to break free from the fire-fighting mode and move into preventive actions. Quite challenging. Data Quality is often seen as a sewer manhole. All what goes wrong in the entire information chain ends up there, whether it is caused upstream or downstream. Very frustrating for the Data Quality team since they are kept accountable not only for their malfunctioning but also for the problems caused by others.

How to escape from this cage of negative press and frustration? Step by step and with patience and stubbornness. Split the problem into sub-problems, identify the symptoms causing the toughest problems and those that are most visible and causing the highest user dissatisfaction. Study and understand the data, find the root causes of the problem, solve them and install the proper checks to keep them in spec after the root cause was solved. Then move on to the next symptom keeping track of the tackled issue to avoid the solved problems coming back. Pinpoint improvements and testify on the successes. Keep up the spirits and communicate proactively.

Get out of the trenches…
